Alpaca Information
Alpaca are one of the 4 South American Camelids

The Llama & Guanaco are about twice the size of an alpaca, and can be as tall as 1.8 m and weigh as much as 140 kg.

The Vicuna is around the same size as the Alpaca but, while the fleece is very valuable, is not a domesticated animal.

The Llama is used as both a pack animal and a fleece animal. The Guanaco lives wild generally in Patagonia and Terra del Fuego.

Alpacas have been domesticated for many thousands of years particularly in Peru and Chile.

There are 2 types of alpaca – the Huacaya and the Suri Alpaca

Huacaya Alpacas
Huacaya have fleece that is crimped fleece like a merino sheep. Around 90-95% of the world's herd of alpaca are Huacaya.

Suri Alpacas
Suris have long gently curled locks, with fleece that feels and looks like silk and has exceptional lustre. Suris number less than 10% of the world's alpaca. The fleece is used mostly for fine designer clothing. Suri fibre is used by such international companies as Versace and Armani, for its luster and lightweight characteristics.

Suri fleece can also be handspun into wonderful fine yarn and used for lace, which is as fine as pashmina

Surilox Suris are bred from the finest Suri bloodlines available. These include animals bred from the Purrumbete & Pucara herds, Suricaya, Allianca, and Summerhill

The Surilox Alpaca are already being recognised as among the best Suris Australia has to offer.
And even though Surilox rarely attends Alpaca Shows, when we do we consistently place in the winning line-up.

In 2008 Surilox Bertolucci took 2 Supreme Suri Awards plus 1 Reserve Champion at 3 separate shows.

In 2005 Surilox Zpaulina won a second place ribbon at the Australian Alpaca Association National Show in Bendigo and went on to win her first Supreme Fleece ribbon at Wool Expo in May 2006.

Surilox Suris win consistently in the show ring & this reflects our outstanding conformation and superb fleece

Our new Huacaya are even being recognised in the show ring, with dense, crimpy animals, large framed animals making the judges take notice!
